Immigration facility staff call police on U.S. senator

Video released on Facebook Sunday shows a U.S. Senator from Oregon having the police called on him and being turned away from an immigration detention center in Brownsville where minor undocumented immigrants are held.

U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, D-Oregon, attempted to tour the Southwest Key Programs facility in the former Walmart on Padre Island Highway.

Merkley is critical of President Donald Trump’s new policy of separating children from their parents when the families illegally cross the border into the United States.

“This cruel treatment of children and families arriving to the U.S. is completely un-American and unacceptable,” Merkley said in a press release. “Americans should be outraged by the fact that our taxpayer dollars are being used to inflict spiteful and traumatizing policies on innocent children. The Trump administration’s vicious, heartless family separation policy must be stopped. President Trump should end this policy immediately-and any Republican who claims to embrace ‘family values’ must step up to oppose this cruel anti-family agenda.”

In the 25-minute Facebook Live video, Merkley tells two Brownsville police officers that a staffer inside the facility told him that a manager would come out and have a brief conversation with him.

An employee of Southwest Key Programs tells Merkley that the staffer who told him a supervisor would have a conversation with him was “misinformed.”

Trump announced the family separation policy in early May.

Merkley also visited a U.S. Customs and Border Protection facility in McAllen, according to a press release.
